Open Letter to Crytek

Dear Crytek,

With the news that a sequel is coming out in 2013, which isn’t very surprising at all, I figured, I’ll make a list of things that will make me want to buy the game. This is for PC gamers of course. This is my way to saying, I’ll give this series one last shot. Please don’t disappoint fans this time around.

So here is what the ideal game is going be like:

1. Support for DX 11 at launch & better graphics options DX11 support from the get go. Kindly do not repeat the same mistake that was made with Crysis 2. The original game had a ton of options. It was very disappointing to see that Crysis 2 was a huge step backwards.

2. No more re-spawning enemies After a high quality game like Crysis, it was just disappointing to see this in the last game.

3. No invisible walls – Kindly do not resort this! It is terrible, and you are far too good to be doing that!

4. Support for quick save PCs are capable of quick save, and I believe that this should be included in the game. Trying to tell gamers when to save and what not to is very annoying. If you want to use checkpoints, go ahead, but let gamers save wherever. Crysis did this, not sure why this had to be removed in the next game, considering this functionality is already built in!

5. Stop trying to ape Call of Duty - Really…just stop. Asking for $60 at launch and making a Call of Duty clone is not a way to make gamers happy.

6. Make your game available on Steam – Unless Crysis 3 received a really good review from PC Gamer, I doubt I will be buying the game on Origin at launch.

7. Avoid day one DLC – You are not helping yourself here. You haven’t done that so far, there is no need to stoop so low this time.

8. Stop worrying about piracy - No matter what you do, your game will be pirated. Give gamers the incentive to buy your game. Here is the best way to do this – make a great game!

9. Don’t ignore PC gamers - Considering that Crysis sold 3 million copies, you really shouldn’t be ignoring this platform. Make a multi platform game by all means. If that means your company will make more money, so be it. That doesn’t mean you have to make a bad port for the PC.

10. Make your website work - It is not possible to create an account on mycrysis.com.

11. Rethink multiplayer - I don’t really care about multiplayer, but it seems there is a lot that is lacking here the last time. Perhaps you should concentrate on making an amazing single player game, and not worry about multiplayer at all? I know that is one bullet point less on the marketing checklist, but if it helps you make a better game, then its worth it.

12. Option to skip ALL cutscenes at the start of the game – We know that EA are the publishers, Crytek are the developers, the game runs best on Nvidia and so on. There is no need to make us sit through these promos EACH time. Deus Ex Human Revolution let users skip cutscenes, and so should Crysis 3.

This is really all I thought about for now. I am a huge fan of the series, and there were parts of Crysis 2 that I thought were amazing, but its nowhere near as good as the first game.

Please, don’t disappoint PC gamers this time around. I have already lost faith in most AAA titles being any good.

Sincerely yours,

RC.

  2. Thank you very much for your comments. I changed the tone quite a bit. I wrote this in the wee hours of the morning, hence it suffers from the troll syndrome.

  3. Yes I don't think anyone will disagree with you but EA has the $$$ and therefor calls the shots.

  6. I'm working on the new version of the MaLDoHD mod for crysis 2.

    You can see here http://maldotex.blogspot.com

I've deleted some invisible walls and will be great if you can list in my blog all the invisible walls that you have found in the game.

    Thanks. And great letter XD

  7. I agree with you. But the only place where Crytek put its ear, is in www.crydev.net

Try to suggest that in crydev or try to critic Rasmus , and they will bann you permanently.

  8. Tbh, I really loved Crysis Wars Multiplayer and I'd love to see it return. This time around it seems Crytek UK is not doing the Multiplayer, so there's hope. Crytek Frankfurt did Crysis/Crysis 2 Campaign and now Crysis 3, Crytek Budapest did Warhead/Wars, and Crytek UK did Crysis 2 Multiplayer.

If there's no In-Game DLC Store, I think we can truly expect this to pop up on Steam, as that was the main cause last time, and Kingdoms of Amalur showed up on Steam as well as Origin. Difference being I think EA not owning the KoA Developers, as is the same case with Crytek.

Since Crysis 3 is being marketed as a "real" Sandbox, I think we can remove any expectations of re-spawning AI (least I hope....) Hopefully less CoD Aping this time as well.

And yes, MOST IMPORTANTLY - NO TERRI-BAD PC PORT. There's no other better way to say to the Pirates "DON'T PAY FOR MY GAME" than a bad PC Port. TV Settings, "Press Start" etc, BAD. No DX11 etc, even worse. Just, no. Crysis sold 3 Million on PC alone, Crysis 2 sold 3 Million across 3 Platforms. Hint Hint?

    P.S. LOL at Twelve. Indeed!

The Urban Jungle Setting is quite unique, and the Bow is awesome. Promising a True Sandbox and DX11 at Launch (they said it would be in at Launch on a couple of places now) makes me hopeful, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what your improved CryEngine 3 can do. Please don't disappoint. EA has gotten into this False Marketing Streak lately with Battlefield 3 and Mass Effect 3, DON'T FOLLOW THEM!

  9. 1. Already confirmed to be true.
    2. Agreed.
    3. Agreed, although I don't remember finding these in Crysis 2 (then again, I tend to go with the flow of the game).
    4. Meh, it's a design choice. Quick saves can often spoil the flow of an encounter, while autosaves make sure you start at a point where you can rethink your approach. In the end, I'm still pro-quicksave. Let the gamer decide.
    5. Agreed, they should move away from the linear shootfest that is CoD. Crysis made its mark in open world playgrounds, stick with it.
    6. Probably not gonna happen and probably not up to Crytek in the first place. EA funds them so EA gets to lay down those terms.
    7. Yes, even if they have DLC ready on launch (because part of the dev team needed to be kept busy), try to hold it off until at least a few weeks later or something. Desert comes after the main course.
    8. I don't really remember them being that worried about that. Sad about the early Crysis 2 leak though.
    9. Crysis 2 was a good game for the PC but yeah, the DX11 features should've been there at launch.
    10. Never been there :P
    11. Multiplayer is sort of a necessity in today's game climate in order for a game to sell to the masses. I'd like to see a combination of the multiplayer of the past two Crysis games. Large areas, tactical gameplay, and with solid infantry combat.
    12. Minor point but agreed.

    That's my 2 cents.

  10. Just a couple of things -
    A. I think Crytek self-funds, but not 100% sure. They're definitely big enough, what with them having 6 Studios all working on something.

    B. Not really, Skyrim has absolutely zero Multiplayer and its sold incredibly well. Sure, fans want Multiplayer, but I doubt its a deal breaker for anyone. Mass Effect 3 would have sold the same without its Co-Op. Kingdoms of Amalur doesn't have Multiplayer, Deus Ex HR didn't have Multiplayer, they both sold great. Some Games need Multiplayer (I.E. Crysis), others just don't (I.E. Mass Effect >.>)
